Drug and Alcohol Detox
For many clients seeking treatment for substance use disorders, a drug and alcohol detox program lasting for 7-10 days is typical if you use alcohol, benzodiazepines like Xanax, heroin, fentanyl or other prescription opioid medications. In fact, most residential treatment programs won’t admit clients that are actively high. The risk to the client is far too great considering the side effects of rapidly discontinuing the use of drugs and alcohol. Some symptoms of going “cold turkey” from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be life threatening. If you’ve been drinking for a long time you can develop delirium tremens, referred to as DT’s,
According to the National Library of Medicine,
“Delirium tremens was first recognized as a disorder attributed to excessive alcohol use in 1813. It is now commonly known to occur as early as 48 hours after abrupt cessation of alcohol in those with chronic use and can last up to 5 days. It has an anticipated mortality of up to 37% without appropriate treatment. It is crucial to identify early signs of withdrawal because it can become fatal.”
