EMDR Therapy Program
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach that was initially developed to help patients deal with trauma, especially those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. However, it is currently being used to treat a wide variety of other mental health and substance abuse disorders. This is guided therapy between a clinician and patient wherein the clinician directs the patient to move their eyes in specific directions while processing traumatic or distressing events. While a relatively new approach to treatment, evidence reveals its efficacy.
According to Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., in her article, The Role of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy in Medicine: Addressing the Psychological and Physical Symptoms Stemming from Adverse Life Experiences,
“Twenty-four randomized controlled trials support the positive effects of EMDR therapy in the treatment of emotional trauma and other adverse life experiences relevant to clinical practice. Seven of 10 studies reported EMDR therapy to be more rapid and/or more effective than trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. Twelve randomized studies of the eye movement component noted rapid decreases in negative emotions and/or vividness of disturbing images, with an additional 8 reporting a variety of other memory effects. Numerous other evaluations document that EMDR therapy provides relief from a variety of somatic complaints.”
About Our EMDR Therapy Program
The clinicians in our facilities may utilize EMDR therapy in their client’s personalized treatment plan if they think it will help them overcome mental health or specific substance use disorders. In their experience, EMDR therapy may help clients overcome more than trauma, PTSD and substance abuse, but also in the treatment of panic disorders, depression, dissociative disorders, acute stress disorder, adjustment disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
With over 100 years of collective experience, the treatment team first takes a careful inventory of each client’s biopsychosocial, medical and clinical history and then they define an individualized treatment plan for each patient. This treatment plan may involve FDA approved medication, a 7-10 day detox program if necessary and EMDR therapy as well as other therapeutic approaches while in residential care.
