Preparing for inpatient sober living treatment may be something you have never done before. It may feel like you need to overpack, but there are definitely some items you won’t need during recovery. Some facilities are more strict than others, but you can always ask questions if you’re unsure. As a starting point, we’ve compiled our top packing essentials for inpatient treatment and sober living in sunny California.
Clothing Items
California is a warm climate, so you are going to need to keep that in mind when choosing your clothing. Sobriety Options inpatient treatment facilities allow you to adventure around the area in your free time, so you want to pack clothing that is comfortable, adaptable, and breathable. Your clothing should be appropriate for a variety of activities. We recommend a closed-toe shoe that is easy to walk in, and a pair of sandals for journeying to the beach, pool, and more. Of course, don’t forget to pack undergarments and socks. Because you will be staying there overnight, be sure to pack pajamas, as well as a robe and slippers if you’d like. California has warm days and chilly nights, so we suggest packing a few pairs of pajamas to accommodate.
In terms of accessories, you should be sure to bring a bag or purse that will carry your essential items when you’re out and about. We also recommend bringing a swimsuit and hat for any summertime activities.
Toiletry Essentials
Everyone has their preferred toiletries, we suggest bringing your hygiene essentials with you. If you run out, our team is always able to help you get more. Basic toiletries to remember include:
- Skincare
- Toothbrush & toothpaste
- Shower products
- Lotion
- Light makeup if preferred
- Deodorant
You know your routine best, so pack what you need to be comfortable during your sober living stay. If you get to treatment and realize you’ve forgotten something, there’s no need to stress, we will help you get the items you need to feel at home. When you feel your best you are more productive, so we want you to look and feel like a million bucks.
Other Items to Consider
Your residential treatment program will occupy much of your day, but you will still have free time to explore your surroundings and keep up with some of your hobbies and passions. We suggest bringing any books, games, journals, or entertainment items you prefer. It is likely that you will undergo a period of time where you do not have access to your cell phone, so you’ll want something offline to entertain yourself. Even though you will be without a phone at some point, you will still have access to phone usage. You should bring the phone numbers of any friends or family members that you would like to be able to reach out to.
During your admissions process, our team will get a comprehensive list of any medications or prescriptions you require. We will let you know which medications are approved to bring, but you will likely have to turn them in at the beginning for supervised administration. All medications should be in their original bottles with your information on the label. Of course, you will not be permitted to bring any medications or substances that are not approved beforehand.
What NOT to Bring
Although it is obvious that you cannot bring drugs or alcohol to residential sober living, there are a few other items we suggest not bringing to treatment. Do not bring large amounts of money or valuables. Feel free to wear your wedding ring and watch, but we suggest leaving any additional jewelry at home for safekeeping. Leave any and all weapons at home, including firearms, knives, pepper spray, and related items. Any music players or e-readers that you bring must not have internet access or the ability to limit WiFi connections. Due to the nature of our care, you will not be permitted to bring a laptop or tablet to our sober living facilities. For a full list of items that cannot be brought into Sobriety Options’ treatment centers, visit our FAQ page or contact our team.
